Montessori School in Riverside, California offers a different kind of learning. Children get to explore and study at their own pace. With studying at hand, we’d want our children’s focus to be present for a considerable amount of time. However, there are times when distraction is present making our kids lose their focus.
The thing about focus is, as we mature, our ability to inhibit distracting stimuli increases. In effect, as we age, it should be easier to focus, but why are there instances wherein we can’t help but be distracted? This could have implications on our motivation. On the other hand, we may just simply be distracted easily. To conquer this, we’ve come up with four tips that can help children—and even adults sharpen their focus on the task at hand.
- Give studying techniques such as the Pomodoro Technique a try. This technique works by allocating an amount of time, say around 25 minutes, and consecutively taking a 5-minute break and repeating. During the 5-minute break, you don’t have to keep memorizing, you can do something unrelated to what you’re trying to learn. After the break is over, you can go back to studying for another 25 minutes.
- Prefer to study in a peaceful environment. As much as studies have shown that certain music can help with concentration, this isn’t actually advisable for everyone. Acknowledging that children learn at different paces, we also acknowledge that some children prefer studying in a peaceful environment. This is because sounds are still in fact stimuli that can pose as distractions.
- Study with your children. Help them learn and retain their memory. As parents, we’re also the primary teachers of our kids and being so, it only makes sense that we help out our children with school work as much as we can. Even just asking and listening to our children about what they learned at school today can help them retain their learning because repetition actually helps our children retain the memories of their learning.
- Help motivate your child with studying through re-enforcement. To help motivate our children, setting goals and rewards after each goal is accomplished is something to try out as well. Of course, we shouldn’t go overboard with study time. But as parents, we should also see to it that our children’s work and accomplishments are rewarded accordingly.
